Archidona: A Historic Town with Character

Archidona is located in the Comarca Nororiental de Málaga, at the foot of the Sierra de Gracia and surrounded by the Sierras del Conjuro and Las Grajas. Over the centuries, the town has played a strategic role due to its position on the route between Granada and Seville.

Thanks to this location, Archidona had a broad view of the surrounding landscape, enhancing its defense. At the same time, this brought challenges, as the town was frequently involved in conflicts and power struggles.

A Destination Full of Character

With a mix of history, culture, and strategic location, Archidona continues to captivate. The combination of historical elements and a dynamic community makes it an interesting place to visit. Whether you come for the architecture, the traditions, or its setting in the landscape, Archidona has something for everyone.

This fortress was designed to be invincible. A deep gorge acted as a natural defense, reinforced by two massive walls. Historical records, both Arab and Christian, confirm its strength.

The inner wall, the highest point of the structure, protected the main tower—later known as the Tribute Tower—and the alcázar, the residence of the wali. The outer wall followed the hillside, shielding the medina, the city’s Muslim quarter.

The fortress gate is a prime example of Islamic military architecture, featuring a winding entrance for extra security. The alcázar, with its square layout, housed the command center and the wali’s chambers, making it the most protected part of the stronghold.

Beneath the ruins of the castle lies the former mosque, now known as the Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia. This remarkable sanctuary is dedicated to the patron saint of Archidona. The entrance leads through a courtyard with a design reflecting Moorish influences, restored in the 18th century by local craftsmen Francisco Berrocal and Francisco de Astorga. Since 2013, the "Interpretation Center of Mozarabic Culture" has provided an overview of the history of Cerro de Gracia and its surroundings.

In 1462, Archidona was conquered by Pedro Girón, Maestre de Calatrava. The mosque was then adapted and became the city's first parish church. Since then, the Virgen de Gracia has been venerated here, a tradition that continues to this day throughout the region.
