Arab Baths of Jaén: A Dive into History
The Moorish baths of Jaén are one of Andalusia’s best-kept secrets. Covering an area of 450 square meters, they are among the largest in Spain. Built in the 11th century and hidden beneath the imposing Villardompardo Palace, they tell a story of transformation and restoration.
From Bathhouse to Tannery
For centuries, the baths functioned as a meeting place and space for relaxation. In the 14th and 15th centuries, their function changed, and they were used as tanneries. Later, in the 16th century, the palace of Fernando de Torres y Portugal was built on top of them, completely concealing the baths. It was not until the 20th century that they found a new role, this time as part of a women's shelter.
A Hidden Treasure Rediscovered
In 1913, a small part of the baths was uncovered, leading to a large-scale restoration. They were soon recognized as a National Monument, and efforts were made to carefully restore their heritage. The restoration, awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra Award, not only revived their architectural splendor but also highlighted their historical significance.
Restoration with European Recognition
The restoration was no simple task. It required a meticulous approach to preserve the original structure while respecting the historical context. Thanks to these efforts, the baths are now seen not only as a local icon but also as an example of European heritage conservation.
A Cultural Center with Two Museums
Today, the baths are not only an architectural highlight but also a cultural center. The "Moorish Baths" Cultural Center houses the Museum of Arts and Popular Customs and the Naïve Art Museum. This combination of history and art makes a visit even more fascinating and diverse.
