Basilica of San Ildefonso in Jaén: A Timeless Landmark

The Basilica of San Ildefonso in Jaén stands out with its three entrances, each reflecting a different architectural style. Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements merge in a structure shaped over the centuries. The Neoclassical façade, with its two asymmetrical towers, is a striking architectural highlight that immediately captures attention.

Different Styles, Unique Details

The oldest entrance on the east side features a Gothic Isabelline doorway, recalling a Marian apparition in 1430. On the north side, at San Ildefonso Square, a Renaissance portal replaced the original Gothic entrance. The west side is adorned with a Neoclassical portal with inscriptions from 1776, dedicated to the Virgen de la Capilla.

Towers with a Story

The northwest tower, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, reflects the architectural style of that period. The southwest tower, added later, lacks bells but bears an inscription from 1868 reading "Viva la Virgen de la Capilla", a tribute to the city's patron saint.

Impressive Interior

Inside, the basilica follows a hall church layout with three naves, separated by pillars with composite columns. Ribbed vaults form four-pointed stars, while the dome above the main altar is supported by Doric columns. The interior combines solid architecture with refined details.

Art and Stained Glass

Paintings, sculptures, and stained-glass windows make the basilica a visual spectacle. The painting of Saint Christopher from 1813 and the Mudéjar sacristy doors are just a few artistic highlights. The altar of the Lord of the Resurrection and the colorful stained-glass windows create a unique atmosphere.
