Benamocarra: A Village with History and Character

Benamocarra is located near Vélez-Málaga and offers a vast view over the valley. The village sits on a low ridge and is surrounded by olive and almond trees, vineyards, and subtropical crops. This authentic Andalusian village has a rich history and a unique identity deeply rooted in the past.

A Village with Moorish Influences

Benamocarra's name has Arabic origins. The term Banu Mukarram possibly refers to a Berber population group that settled here. This heritage is still visible in the narrow streets and traditional architecture.

Historical Events

In 1487, the village was conquered by Ferdinand the Catholic, marking a period of tension between Christian settlers and the original Muslim population. In the second half of the 16th century, the moriscos—former Muslims who had converted to Christianity—were expelled. This was followed by a repopulation with Christians from other parts of Andalusia, such as Puente Genil, Estepa, and Antequera.

Notable Residents

Benamocarra is the birthplace of Eduardo Ocón Rivas (1833), an influential composer and organist. He played a significant role in Málaga’s musical history and was the principal director of the Higher Conservatory of Music. Another notable figure from the village was Francisco López Sánchez, who became a bishop in Peru. Their contributions have placed Benamocarra on the map.

Vibrant Festivals and Traditions

The village celebrates its history with various festivals and events. These gatherings bring the community together to honor traditions. Festivals such as the Feria and Semana Santa attract many visitors each year. These are moments when music, dance, and gastronomy come together, creating the unique atmosphere of Benamocarra.

A Worthwhile Visit

Today, Benamocarra is a peaceful yet accessible destination. The combination of historical charm and natural beauty makes it an attractive place for a day trip or a longer stay. Walk through the surroundings, taste local specialties, and meet the welcoming locals.
