Gibralfaro Castle: The Fortress Overlooking Málaga

Gibralfaro Castle towers high above Málaga, offering an impressive view of the city and its port. Situated 132 meters above sea level, this fortress served as a strategic stronghold for centuries. Originally built to protect the Alcazaba, it became one of the strongest fortifications of Moorish Al-Andalus.

A Fortress with History

This castle was built in the 14th century by order of Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. The name Gibralfaro comes from the Arabic "Yabal" (mountain) and the Greek "Faros" (lighthouse). Its sturdy walls and towers provided protection against attacks and served as a lookout over the city and the sea. After the Christian reconquest, it was used as a military base and even as a prison.

Impressive Construction and Strategic Location

With a total area of over 21,000 m² and walls stretching 733 meters, Gibralfaro Castle is an architectural masterpiece. Inside the walls, you will find deep wells, underground cisterns, and a former gunpowder magazine. Several access gates lead into the castle, some of which were added after the Christian conquest.

From Military Stronghold to Tourist Attraction

During the War of Independence in the 19th century, the castle underwent significant reinforcements, but after the departure of French troops, it partially fell into disrepair. In 1977, the last military buildings were demolished, and the complex was given a new purpose. Between 1989 and 1999, a large-scale restoration took place, adding pathways, balustrades, and a visitor center.
