The English Cemetery: A Unique Burial Ground in Málaga

Why Is There an English Cemetery in Málaga?

The English Cemetery in Málaga was established in 1831 out of sheer necessity. At the time, all cemeteries in Spain were consecrated for Catholic burials, leaving Protestants without an official resting place. This led to undignified burial practices, where bodies were secretly buried on the beach. The problem persisted until the British consul, William Mark, found a structured solution.

William Mark’s Solution: An Official Resting Place

In 1824, William Mark was appointed as the British consul in Málaga. After years of negotiations, he secured a plot of land near the Almería road in 1829. This became the first Protestant cemetery on the Iberian Peninsula. The first person buried there in January 1831 was Mr. George Stephens, followed shortly after by Robert Boyd, a political rebel.

Notable Names and Historical Contributions

The cemetery serves as the final resting place for individuals who played significant roles in Málaga’s history. There are links to the city’s coat of arms, the hospital donated by the heirs of Joseph William Noble, and the political influence of Robert Boyd and General Torrijos. Additionally, well-known writers such as Jorge Guillén, Gerald Brenan, and Marjorie Grice-Hutchinson are buried here.

Management and Decline

For over 175 years, the cemetery was managed by successive British consuls. Initially, there was some financial support from Britain, but this ceased in 1903. As a result, the cemetery fell into decline, and by the late 20th century, its maintenance had significantly deteriorated.

Revitalization by the English Cemetery Foundation

In 2006, British consul Bruce McIntyre made an important decision: ownership of the cemetery was transferred to the English Cemetery Foundation of Málaga, a non-profit organization. Since then, the cemetery has been managed as a cultural heritage site, maintained by volunteers and donors. In 2012, it was officially recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site by the Junta de Andalucía and included in the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe.
