Cortegana: Between Nature and History

Cortegana is a village where nature and history come together. It is located in the Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche Natural Park, a protected area in the north of the province of Huelva. Here, rolling hills, forests of holm oaks and chestnut trees, and gently flowing streams create a picturesque landscape. The natural areas of Las Peñas de Aroche and Sierra Pelada y Ribera del Aserrador are also part of the municipal territory.

A Journey Through Time

The history of Cortegana dates back to the Turdetani and spans the Roman period, when the village was known as Corticata, to the Christian Reconquest. The Knights Hospitaller played a role during this time, and the village changed hands multiple times during conflicts with Portugal. Stability was finally established with the Treaty of Badajoz. The Castle of Cortegana, one of the village’s most iconic landmarks, was built by order of Sancho IV between 1284 and 1295 to defend the border with Portugal.

Festivals and Traditions

The village comes alive during its many festivals and celebrations. Every year, residents and visitors gather to enjoy traditional events. These festivities are not only an expression of culture but also strengthen the sense of community.

What You Shouldn’t Miss

Cortegana boasts a charming villagescape with narrow streets and historic buildings. The castle stands tall above the village, offering a panoramic view of the surroundings. The Church of the Divine Savior, designated as a Cultural Heritage site, is another highlight. Both locations tell the story of the region and its rich past.

Cortegana Today

The village has preserved its historical character while also offering modern amenities. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of nature, while local gastronomy and crafts enhance the traditional atmosphere. Hiking trails, cozy squares, and authentic eateries make Cortegana a destination where you can experience both relaxation and culture.
