La Maroma: Climbing the Highest Mountain in Málaga

La Maroma towers over the province of Málaga at 2,066 meters high. This impressive mountain is part of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. Officially named Tejeda, it is most commonly known as La Maroma. Located near the village of Canillas de Aceituno, it is a popular destination for hikers who enjoy challenging routes and breathtaking views.

Access Routes and Hiking Trails

There are several routes to reach the summit of La Maroma, each offering a unique experience with varying levels of difficulty and landscapes.

Route from Ventas de Zafarraya

The route from Ventas de Zafarraya, known as the "El Robledal" trail, is one of the shorter paths to the summit. Covering approximately eight kilometers, the hike takes around four hours. This trail passes through forests and rocky sections, providing a diverse landscape.

Hike from Alcaucín

For a more challenging trek, start at the El Alvázar recreation area in Alcaucín. This ten-kilometer trail takes about five hours to complete. Along the way, hikers will encounter steep mountain slopes and open plains with stunning panoramic views.

The Historic "Ruta de los Neveros"

From the village of Canillas de Aceituno, the "Ruta de los Neveros" leads to the summit. This eleven-kilometer trail was historically used to transport ice by donkey. The hike takes approximately five hours and offers a historical insight into the region.

Alternative Route from Sedella

Another approach to La Maroma starts in the village of Sedella. This trail offers a varied terrain and different perspectives of the natural park. It is an interesting option for those looking for a less crowded route.

Views and Preparation

At the summit of La Maroma, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. Due to the challenging terrain, proper preparation is essential. Sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and appropriate clothing are a must.
